How to Get Out of Town

We tried to make ghillie suits, but when we put them on, they were hot and stuffy. I didn’t know what a real ghillie suit would be like, but I was covered in fresh leaves and weighed a lot, which limited my movement and also my vision.

The city was desolate, but it was different from the forest, and Kimishima made some adjustments to make it a little simpler. It was made with magic, so the adjustments didn’t seem to be that challenging. As a result, we settled on something that would look like a vest and make our white clothes less conspicuous.

The ghillie suit seemed to be working well, and so far, we had avoided being spotted by the monsters. However, just before reaching the gate of the town, there was a sleeping monster.

“Don’t stay …”

To get out of here, we had to walk past the monster. It was snoring or roaring in its sleep, but I couldn’t imagine how deep a sleep it must have been. I was at a loss as I looked at the monster in the distance.

The city was surrounded by a wall-like structure, probably to prevent monsters from invading. I could see that the wall was damaged in places, but it seemed to be quite thick and there was no place where there were even holes. Then we had to go through a gate to get out of the city.

“Are there any other gates?”

“I think there are. Should we go along the wall?”

“Is think so…”

We had come all this way, but it can’t be helped. Slowly, we moved away from that spot.

I had seen monsters a few times before and had noticed that many of them were sleeping. The most common was the animal-like shape of the monsters. If they were nocturnal, we would need to find a safe place to hide for the night or get out of the city while it was still light.

As I was walking along, wondering if there were any buildings that would be suitable for hiding, Kimishima tugged on my sleeve from behind. I sat down a little and stopped and hurriedly looked around, wondering if there was a monster in the building.

“Sensei …”

“Is it a monster? Which way?”

“…”

“Hmm?”

“Um… I want to go to the bathroom.”

Okay. I was too uptight for that. That was a very real and serious problem. I wondered what I should do. But this city seemed to be rather modernized. There might be at least a restroom in a building around there.

“Let’s go … and check out that building a little bit.”

The second floor was half open, and I could see the blue sky. In the back was what looked like a blacksmith shop, and a collapsed chimney could be seen. I had a feeling that there were many buildings like this in this section of the city. The town was situated near a mountain, and perhaps there was a mine in the mountain.

We looked around the location of a restroom based on the Japanese building style.

“Is this…?”

Toilets in this world seemed to be quite similar to Western-style toilets in Japan. As was the case in the Sky Temple, if human-shaped creatures excreted from the same place, they would probably settle for such a shape. When I peeked into the hole, I heard the sound of running water from the bottom. It was not a flush, but it might have been similar to a flush.

“It looks fine.”

“Oh, thank you very much”

“Okay, I’ll be outside…”

“Yes.”

The door to the toilet had been already destroyed. The door was placed on the side against the toilet, so it was hard to see from the outside, but I was hesitant to go anywhere where I could hear much noise. But I was also worried about leaving.

… I was a little worried about it, but I decided to do my business in the shadows, a little further away, while being on the lookout for monsters. Once I turned around to Kimishima, I made sure everything was okay and went out through the broken wall.

! ! ! ! !

I passed through a hole in the wall and came face to face with a monster. The monster had a long, large face like a warthog, with huge, pointed fangs and horns. And although it was a beast, it was standing on two legs.

“Buurrruuuu.”

The carp mouth was cut off reflexively while in a slightly bent posture to go through the hole.

The monster must have been surprised by the sudden appearance of a human being in front of it. It showed a momentary stiffening of its body. Even so, it quickly adjusted its snout and tried to reach out its long-clawed hand. But my right hand was already gripping the hilt. When the monster started to move. I was done pulling it out. I had cut off its grimy head.

It was all right. There was no slackness. I exhaled a little trembling breath, and I am relieved to find myself no longer hesitant or unsure.

“Phew…”

It was probably also true that I had moved up the ladder. I noticed that the sharpness of my body was completely different than before.

I lightly wiped the blade covered in monster grease and put it back in its sheath.

Click.

I finally pulled my eyes away from the crumbling monster.

My heart was still pounding. It was only natural. It was like opening the door and finding a cockroach or a centipede crawling on the floor. And the monster was the one that was going to take my life. It was worse than that.

Suu. Hah.

Even if I calmed my mind, it would take some time for my heartbeat, which was moving at top speed, to settle down.

“… What was that sound?”

“Hmm? Nothing.”

It would be unbecoming of me to scare her while she was taking her time to do her business.

I did my business in the shadows. I walked back into the building as if nothing had happened. I had gone up the ladder, but I wonder if my magic power hadn’t increased that much. I pondered as I probed for the remaining magic power. Even so, my magical power, which until now had been reduced by about 2/3 with each slash, was now reduced to about a half of what I had.

It didn’t take that long for magic power to return, perhaps because my magic power was low to begin with, but I felt much more secure than if I could only slash once.

I waited in a position where I could not see the inside of the toilet, and Kimishima came out. There was a fogged-up mirror in the bathroom, so I wondered if she did it while looking in it. She had tied up her long, straight hair, which had grown beautifully, so that it would be easy to move around.

“I thought … would be easier to move.”

“Oh, oh…, it’s nice.”

“I’m not at all fashionable in this leafy cloak.”

“Haha… Well, this is what it is.”
