Building the Walls, But What’s This?
A week had passed since the defeat of the Orc King and Orc General, along with their horde.
The tale of their valor had spread far and wide, from even the remote domains of Count Sugoella. The Landmark Family had gained recognition and fame like never before.
Count Sugoella himself had showered the three generations of the Landmark Knights with well-deserved praise.
It was clear that had the Landmark Family been defeated, tomorrow would have been uncertain. Reports from the Adventurer’s Guild even suggested that the Orc King was on the brink of becoming an A-rank target, had the Landmark Family not intervened.
The Landmark Family had played a crucial role as a bulwark against demonic forest.
Considering the recent successes of the Landmark Family, Count Sugoella decided to seek the baron status for this loyal vassal in the capital.
In the days that followed, this request was granted, and the Landmark Family was promoted, but that’s a story for another time.
Grandfather Kamiza and Ryu were once again building walls fortified with earth magic, along with a small fortress, on the border with the demonic forest.
This time, it was not just a temporary structure but a permanent one, built to last.
Up until now, Kamiza had maintained the balance by hunting monsters in the forest alone, but this recent experience had shown him that he was feeling his age.
“Sorry, Ryu. Let me help. I’m not very good with fine magical manipulation, but I’ll do my best.”
“No, Grandpa. I thought I should help too.”
Ryu had realized the need to create something substantial to protect the Landmark domain in the wake of this recent battle. However, their supply of mana-restoring potions was not infinite, and they were running low after the recent events.
“Grandpa, could you find the ingredients for mana-restoring potions in the forest?”
“You’re a demanding grandchild, wahaha!”
Of course, it was all in good humor, and Kamiza ventured into the forest to gather the ingredients.
After a few days of camping on the border of the demonic forest, Kamiza and Ryu completed the sturdy walls and a small fortress.
They planned to station a few guards there permanently, which would increase expenses, but with the Landmark Family’s current prosperity, it wouldn’t be a burden.
The border would continue to be visited by Kamiza periodically, as in the past, and the Landmark domain would be even safer from now on.
Ryu had learned the importance of walls through this recent experience, but the Landmark town lacked such defenses.
So, he suggested to his father, Farza, that they should build them.
Of course, Ryu would work on it diligently every day, similar to the roads, so it wouldn’t be too costly.
“It’s my wish too, but let’s consult with our liege, Count Sugoella, first. Building walls without permission might be seen as a sign of treason.”
Father Farza wisely suggested.
Indeed, Farza’s words made sense. If the vassals suddenly started building walls, it could be misinterpreted as war preparations.
Ryu was reminded that well-intentioned ideas could sometimes pose risks, and he resolved to act more thoughtfully from now on.
Harvest season had arrived once again. As expected, the crops were bountiful, and the Coffee fields were eagerly awaiting the harvest in two months.
The Harvest Festival was in full swing, and Ryu and his companions put extra effort into making their sweets, including their popular Rigo Pie, which they sold at a stall.
“Thank you for the delicious treats again this year, young master!”
“We were secretly looking forward to it again this year, so thanks!”
“I heard they weren’t going to have Candy Rigo this year, and I was disappointed, but this is delicious!”
It was very well received by the residents and sold out again this year.
He was happy that people were looking forward to it.
What should he do next year? Just thinking about it was fun for Ryu.
However!
He came to such a fun place again this year.
It was Baron Elanza, the neighboring lord.
Without learning his lesson, he came to borrow money, claiming that this year’s harvest was poor.
Naturally, Ryu prepared a loan document, and after Elanza signed it, he handed over the money. Ryu deducted the interest from the loan Elanza had taken last year.
This visibly displeased Baron Elanza, but Ryu said,
“You don’t have to borrow if you don’t want to.”
Baron Elanza snatched the bag of coins from Farza’s hand and left in a huff.
“That’s not how borrowers should behave.”
Ryu remarked, his father Farza nodding in agreement.
Of course, their maids didn’t need to be told.
After Baron Elanza had left, they scattered salt at the doorsted.
