Surviving in a F*cked-Up Fantasy World Chapter 13

Visit

For the past few days, the mansion had been unusually busy.

Normally, it was a place devoid of visitors—so much so that it wouldn’t be wrong to call it reclusive.

But now, after two years in the new estate, its first guest, and a noble one at that, was due to arrive.

Even as I lay in the garden, I could see everyone bustling about, preparing for the guest’s arrival with great enthusiasm.

And so, the day of the much-anticipated visit finally arrived.

“Rain! Are you here?”
“Yes, I’m here.”
“I’ll fix your hair!”

The maids barged into the doghouse where I usually stayed by myself.

By the way, my name is Rain.

Only a few people in this estate call me by my name, and the maids who just came in are among them.

“How is your hair so soft?”
“Mind if I tidy up the house for you?”
“Do as you like.”

Occasionally, the maids, when they had free time, would come to the doghouse and fuss over me.

At first, they were clearly terrified of me.

“You’ve spilled all the snacks here.”
“Have I? I forgot.”
“You should’ve put them in the container. I’ll clean this plate for you!”

Now, though, that fear has long since vanished.

Perhaps it’s because the young lady calls me “Puppy” every day, eroding whatever intimidating image I once had.

“Since the guest is coming today, be careful not to wrinkle your clothes or mess up your hair.”
“Understood.”
“Also, I heard the young lady will be boasting about you. I should put in more effort to dress you up!”
“I’d appreciate that…”

Some of the maids, bored from working in the garden, would frequently style my hair.

But this time, since the occasion was a noble guest, they were going all out.

“Hold still. Don’t shake your head.”
“…I won’t.”
“Let’s try slicking it back today.”

Still, being surrounded by the maids like this was relaxing and pleasant.

It felt like just yesterday that I was stuck in the Colosseum, fighting men all day.

I can’t imagine how I managed to survive back then. If anyone asked me to go back, I’d sooner die.

“This is something I bought at the night market. It keeps your hair in place.”
“Oh, that? Everyone’s using it these days.”
“Let me just use a little—oops, too much! Sorry!”

The way they treated me was… complicated.

They were too cautious for it to be how one would treat a pet, but they also weren’t as formal as they were with knights like Darren or Kaiden.

Should I just say that it feels like I’m treating a very precious dog?

Regardless, their kindness toward me was clear.

“What’s everyone doing?”
“Ah!”
“Back to your stations, now!”

The head maid’s scolding dispersed them, and the maids reluctantly left after tidying up my hair.

Once alone again, I stretched out lazily in the doghouse.

The place feels a bit more spacious after they cleaned it.

I’m always grateful for their efforts.

If I get a chance, I’ll make sure to repay their kindness.

Now, when will the guest arrive?

I heard they’d be here in the afternoon, and it’s only noon now. I might as well take a nap until then.

There’s nothing else to do but train, after all.

This world lacks any real entertainment.

Still, I’d rather be bored than suffer. Thinking so, I closed my eyes.

And when I opened them again…

“There’s a doghouse here?”
“Is this where the pet lives?”

I heard voices just outside the doghouse.

“Oh…”
“Given the size of the house, it could belong to a monster pet. Don’t get too close.”

…Who are they?

It wasn’t the familiar voices of the estate’s staff.

“I’ll take a look.”
“Be careful.”

And then I sensed someone approaching, clearly intent on checking the doghouse.

It wasn’t like last time when masked intruders appeared. From their tone, I could guess who they were.

Before they peeked inside, I stepped out to greet them first.

“Hello.”
“Oh?”
“Huh?”

The two people seemed startled by my appearance.

One was a girl who looked to be around my age, and the other was a middle-aged woman who seemed quite dignified.

“W-Who are you?”
“Are you the caretaker?”
“No, I live here.”

…They were likely the guests we’d been expecting.

But why were they here? Where was the young lady?

“Are you the guests expected today?”

I asked politely, assuming they were nobility.

“Ah, yes, that’s right… But who are you?”
“Well, I’m…”

Just as I was about to explain myself to the two confused people who had clearly not expected me to pop out of a doghouse…

“There you two are!”

The young lady approached from the front garden.

“What are you doing with Puppy?”
“Puppy…?”

Her brazen declaration that I was her “puppy” left the two guests utterly bewildered.

Hmm, I guess word hasn’t spread much. This estate really is tight-lipped.

“Come here, Puppy!”

At her call, I walked over. She extended her hand expectantly.

…That meant she wanted me to bring my head to her, right?

I knelt down on one knee and leaned my head toward her hand.

Pat, Pat.

“Good job!”

…And now I’ve shown this side of me in front of outsiders.

Well, it wasn’t exactly embarrassing anymore.

The estate staff sees this kind of thing all the time, after all.

I’d long grown indifferent to being treated like a dog.

“The puppy you said you’d introduce… is a person?”
“Yep! I’ve been raising him for two years now.”
“…Oh.”

It seemed there was still some common sense left in the world.

The two guests remained visibly flustered.

Right, that’s the normal reaction.

What kind of young lady raises a person like a dog?

“If I’d known, I would’ve brought a different gift.”
“What did you bring?”
“I brought a toy for dogs… If I had known, I would have chosen something else.”

…Wait.
This reaction wasn’t what I expected.

The two were shocked at first, but soon nodded in understanding.

“What a fine puppy he is.”
“Yes, you can sense his dignity. He’s well-cared for.”

What the…
I thought I’d learned much about this world, but it seems I was still naive.

“Hehe, my puppy is handsome, isn’t he?”

Pat, Pat.

Encouraged by their compliments, the young lady enthusiastically ruffled my hair, undoing all the effort the maids had put into styling it.

…They’d probably cry if they saw this.

“My puppy has so many talents!”
“Talents? Does he have any special skills?”

However, it seems like the young lady wants to brag more.

“I was saving this for later… Alright, Puppy! Teleport!”

“Huh?”

“Teleport!”

“Ah…”

Look at her sparkling eyes.

I thought she was exaggerating, but no, she actually wanted me to show off.

“Understood.”

Well, I have to obey.

I stood up and activated Fleet, moving instantly to the roof of the doghouse.

“Huh?”

The two guests seemed surprised for a moment.

“Fleet?”
“…You recognized it.”

I turned back toward them. They’d identified it immediately.

“Wow, someone my age can use Fleet that well?”
“It’s Puppy’s specialty!”
“He’s not just any puppy.”

Of course, it’s impressive.

Where else in the world would you find a “puppy” using Fleet?

And so flawlessly, too.

If there’s one thing I’ve truly honed, it’s Fleet.

“Does he know how to do anything else?”
“Of course! My puppy has so many tricks up his sleeve.”

There’s a lot I could show them.

But should I really put on the full show of tricks for our guests here?

I felt reluctant to display my entire repertoire in front of strangers.

“Young lady…”

So, at the moment when I was trying to carefully stop the young lady.

“What is everyone doing in the garden?”

At exactly that moment, I heard a voice that I wanted to hear.

“Lowell?”
“Yes, my lady. I see you’re with our guests.”

Of course.

That old butler always has impeccable timing.

“Oh! Sir Lowell, it’s an honor to meet you…!”
“Haha, it’s a pleasure to meet you as well.”
“I’ve heard so much about your esteemed reputation!”

The young noblewoman immediately bowed her head as soon as she saw Lowell, unsure of what to do with herself.

…Was he that impressive?

Aria treats him like a kind old grandfather, but the rest of the staff always show him such reverence that I’d figured he was someone extraordinary.

Seeing even another noble act this way, though, was surprising.

“The honor is mine.”

The middle-aged woman accompanying the girl also gave a small bow of respect toward Lowell. Clearly, his reputation extended far.

“I see the lady was proudly showing off the puppy I trained.”
“Trained? You, Sir Lowell?”

Lowell casually remarked upon his arrival, and both guests’ gazes shifted to me.

They seemed to be wondering whether “trained” referred to actual dog training or something more akin to teaching.

…Is it even a question?

If I can use Fleet, it’s clear I was taught.

“Hmm.”
“He’s definitely no ordinary puppy…”

Their scrutinizing stares were getting uncomfortable, and I was doing my best to ignore them when another voice rang out.

“What are you all doing down there?”

The voice came from above.

I tilted my head upward, surprised, as a gust of wind accompanied the figure descending gracefully from the sky.

Whoosh—

I saw a woman coming down with the wind.

Her red hair billowed in the wind, and I instantly recognized her from afar.

“Teacher?”
“Master!”

Even the mage, whom the highly respected Lowell had praised as extraordinary, descended from the sky effortlessly.

“So, we meet here? Hmm…”

Then, her fiery red eyes turned toward me.

They weren’t like the young lady’s jewel-like, pretty eyes. Instead, they blazed like flames, fierce and intense.

“So, you’re the ‘puppy’ I’ve been hearing about?”

Pat, Pat.

The woman extended her hand and casually ruffled my hair.

“You’ve got quite the attitude for a ‘puppy’, don’t you?”

Even young lady’s esteemed teacher, the powerful mage, naturally treated me like a dog.

I sighed internally.

Well, it seems this is just how things are.

I suppose I don’t need to bother hiding in the doghouse the next time guests arrive.
