Surviving in a F*cked-Up Fantasy World Chapter 31

Weekend

“Young lady, you should unpack your things first.”
“Oh, right! I’ll be back!”

The young lady, who had been in the garden for a moment, headed into the mansion to unpack her belongings.

Did she come straight here without unpacking first?

Come to think of it, she was still wearing her uniform from the Royal Magic Academy.

“Phew…”

I let out a small sigh of relief and sat down in the garden.

Hah

Whitey was sitting next to me.
He seemed to have just woken up, as he was nodding off while sitting there.

Honestly, I was a little nervous.

What if the young lady’s eyes suddenly started glowing like they used to and she decided to kick me out again?

Lately, I haven’t seen that eerie glow often, but when I think about it, those glowing eyes were unsettling and chilling.

I suspect it’s because of those eyes that she treats me like a puppy.
What on earth does she see, and what goes through her mind?

When I recall how she ran straight toward me the moment we arrived at the mansion, she seemed like nothing more than an ordinary girl.

Before she went to the Magic Academy, she was a bit moody—likely due to her teenage years—but she seems to have mellowed out a bit.

Or perhaps she’s just in a good mood?

Judging by how excited she was earlier, she must have been looking forward to returning to the mansion.

Well, in any case.

“You’re wearing that again after so long.”
“Yes, since the young lady is back.”

Since the young lady has returned, I put on the collar again after a long time.

Now that I think about it, I haven’t worn it in a while.

Not that it feels like much.

Compared to the shackle-like collar I wore when I first arrived at the mansion, this is nothing.

Looking back, I still wonder why they even had such an item.

It’s typically used to restrain Aura users of immense power, likely to capture knights during wartime.

It’s so effective that even now, I probably wouldn’t be able to break it if I wore it again.

How Alden managed to break such a shackle and escape the Colosseum remains a mystery.

Has it already been five years since then? Time flies.

“Puppy!”

Just then, as I was fiddling with the collar, the young lady reappeared.

Her outfit… it was closer to training gear than the dresses she usually wore.

“Young lady, what are you planning to do?”
“Let’s train! I’ve learned magic!”
“Ah, I see.”

Since she just returned from the Magic Academy, she must be eager to show off her new skills.

“Yes, let’s go.”

Curious about the magic she had learned, I followed her to the training grounds.

“This place hasn’t changed at all!”

The training ground we arrived at was empty.

Unlike recent quiet days, today was the young lady’s return, so everyone was likely busy patrolling the mansion.

The memory of the mansion burning down two years ago was still fresh, so no one would dare lower their guard while she was here.

“Let me know if you feel like you might get hurt, okay?”
“Yes, don’t worry about me.”

At the training ground, I warmed up lightly.
Though she called it training, it was more like sparring.

Ever since Terra suggested sparring as a method of training, the young lady had adopted this approach before going to the Magic Academy.

“The first spell makes the ground disappear! Don’t fall, okay?”
“…Don’t worry about me.”

She must have learned a lot of spells, but I doubted I would get hurt.

It hasn’t been that long since she started at the Magic Academy, so she’s probably only learned the basics.

With that, I got ready and stood before her.

“Here I go! Focus here!”

The young lady’s hands began to glow with a magic circle.

Unlike the usual red magic circles I had seen, this one was a dull, earthy color.

It must be the spell she mentioned, something that affects the ground.

Curious to see how it worked, I activated Fleet and waited for the magic to unfold.

Soon, the magic circle emitted light that seeped into the ground.

Thud!

The ground beneath me vanished in an instant.

“…Oh.”

Was it supposed to be this powerful?

As I felt myself lose balance with the ground gone, I quickly regained footing and landed safely, thanks to Fleet.

“Puppy, are you okay?”
“Yes, I’m fine.”

Though I was fine, I was a bit surprised.

The ground had disappeared much deeper than I anticipated.

Perhaps about waist-deep.
The range is considerable, too.

If the ground were to suddenly collapse during battle, it would be terrifying.
It seems so useful that I’d like to learn it myself.

“Alright, next is…”

The young lady proceeded to show me the other basic spells she had learned.

“This one is a double barrier.”
“A double one?”
“Yup! Go ahead, hit it! It won’t break!”

Crash!

“…Oh.”
“…It broke.”

Of course, not all the spells were particularly strong.

“Light!”

Flash!

But there were also some that seemed highly practical for real combat.

…Did Terra really just teach her how to shoot fireballs all this time?

I guess if you really want to learn useful magic, you have to go to school.
The young lady was practically beaming as she showed off her new spells.

“How is it? I learned a lot, didn’t I?”
“Yes… But do they normally teach so much?”

More importantly, how did she manage to learn so much in such a short time at the Magic Academy?

Even basic magic isn’t something you master overnight.

The sheer amount of studying must have been enormous.

When I asked if other students learned as much, she replied.

“Huh? They said I was learning quickly, so they taught me more.”

So it wasn’t the standard curriculum.

Well, she is the Boyd family’s prodigy, and if they’re hyping her as a genius, it’s no surprise she stood out at the Magic Academy.

“Now then…”

Having seen all the new spells, it was time to assess her progress with existing ones.

With a flicker, a red magic circle formed in her hands, conjuring a blazing fireball in midair.
It was nearly the size of her upper body.

It seemed larger than the last time I saw it.

Clearly, Terra’s focus on teaching her this spell wasn’t for nothing.

The power felt on a different level compared to the other spells she showed earlier.

“Can I shoot this? It’s been a while, so are you sure it’s okay?”
“Yes, don’t worry.”

The fireball was slightly bigger, and its intensity seemed more pronounced.

Still, I assured her with confidence.

Hooh

Ever since the fight with the masked man in the sewers, I’ve been emphasizing Guard and Rush in my training.

Eyeing the fireball, I drew the sword I had brought along.

While I used to borrow a sword from the mansion for such occasions, I needed to grow accustomed to this one.
Besides, it was better suited for channeling Rush.

“Alright, I’m doing it. It’s different from before, is that okay?”
“Yes, it’s fine.”

With that—

“Here I go!”

Fwoosh!

The young lady launched the fireball, still showing traces of worry.

As it hurtled toward me, I gathered Aura.

Without using Fleet or Track, I opted for a simple Guard to protect myself and infused my sword with Rush.

Then, as the fireball filled my vision—

Slash!

I swung the Rush-infused sword at the fireball.

Boom!!

The fireball exploded in the opposite direction with a thunderous roar.

A flawless deflection.

“Wow!”

I heard the young lady’s excited cheer from across the training ground as I sheathed my sword.

More importantly, my sword remained unscathed.

In the past, every time I deflected a fireball, the borrowed sword would end up battered and nearly unusable.

As expected, using a good sword makes all the difference.

“Well done, Puppy!”

The young lady clapped her hands as she approached, then patted my head.

“Let’s head back now!”

We left the completely wrecked training ground behind.

…The clean-up will likely fall to the servants now. Judging by the stiff expressions on the faces of a few overly enthusiastic staff members, I’m guessing they’ve been assigned the task.

In any case, with the training over, we returned to the garden where the doghouse was.

The young lady seemed intent on spending the rest of the day with me as she trailed me all the way back to the doghouse.

“Huh? It’s wandering around?”
“Yes, it’s becoming more active now.”

At that moment, I spotted Whitey wandering around the garden, attracting attention from the maids.

“Hm, so it’s not a complete baby anymore?”
“Its eyes only opened recently.”

She seemed to be interested in Whitey, so she walked up to him briskly.

“Heh… You’re cute, after all.”

She then carefully picked Whitey up.

“Where did you find it?”
“I found him up in the mountains.”
“The Kaine Mountain Range? Hmm…”

The young lady tilted her head slightly, as if pondering why I had been there.

“Were its parents dead?”

She dismissed the thought casually, turning her attention back to Whitey.

“Yes, they were dead when I found him.”

I replied, feeling a slight sense of tension.
…Why do I feel tense?

She’s just an ordinary teenage girl.

“Hmm…”

It’s all because of those crimson eyes.

Usually, they’re like beautiful gemstones.

But sometimes, they shine with an eerie, unnatural light.

“So, you decided to make it part of the family?”

And just like that, her eyes glowed again.

‘Oh, no.’

It wasn’t the sunlight making her eyes gleam but something unnatural, almost as if they were emitting light on their own.

She stared at Whitey with those glowing eyes and said.

“Who gave you permission?”

The chilling words froze everyone in place.

Whitey, me, the servants trailing us—everyone.

She looked like an innocent teenage girl, but in moments like these, she carried an unexplainable, commanding presence that left everyone paralyzed.

“Young lady.”

The only one who seemed unaffected was Lowell, who spoke up calmly.

“Haha! I’m kidding!”

The young lady laughed brightly, her expression instantly shifting. She gently set the trembling Whitey back down.

“Hmm, is it really that cold?”

She then removed her coat and draped it over Whitey, leaving everyone speechless.

The chill I felt wasn’t from the weather. It was terrifying—far more so than before.

…Maybe it’s because she’s learned magic?

No, that’s probably too much of a stretch.

In any case…

Whimper… Whimper…

Judging by how completely terrified Whitey was, the hierarchy was now firmly established.

For a spirit beast, it was almost pitiful to see how frightened he was.

I’ll make sure to bring him some treats later.
