Surviving in a F*cked-Up Fantasy World Chapter 34

Afterward

Even though she had insisted she didn’t want to leave, the young lady ended up coming all the way to my house.

In the end, the next day, she obediently left for the Royal Magic Academy.

“I’ll be back soon!”

Thankfully, it seemed that the advice I gave her yesterday had brought some peace of mind; she looked noticeably more at ease.

“Yes, safe travels.”
“Of course! I’m special, so school is nothing!”

Well, if anything, she seemed a bit too confident, but as a daughter of the Boyd family, it was fitting.

“Behave yourself while I’m gone, alright?”
“Don’t worry about me.”

And so, the young lady eventually departed for the Academy.

After that, silence descended upon the mansion once more.

It really is quiet without her around.

To be fair, this is how the mansion usually is, but when the young lady is here, it always gets unusually noisy.

“Phew…”

With the young lady gone, I returned to the doghouse.

After staying up all night listening to her endless chatter, I planned to catch up on sleep.

As I entered the doghouse, I noticed Whitey lying on the cushion I usually sleep on.

He had a rough time yesterday, too.

After all, he’d spent the entire night terrified of the young lady, so I doubt he got any proper rest.

“Let’s take a nap together.”

Carefully lifting the sleeping Whitey, I placed him beside me and dozed off with him.

*

The day after the young lady left.

“It’s been a while.”
“Oh, yes, it has.”

I met my instructor, Eric, after quite some time.

After sustaining an injury during a mission in the sewers, my lessons had been put on hold. Eric, too, had been busy, so we hadn’t met for a while. Now that he was back, my lessons were resuming.

I actually enjoyed Eric’s lessons—they were both fun and informative—so I was glad.

Besides, in this world, common sense can be bizarre at times, so it’s best to learn as much as possible.

“You’ve heard about the Heroes, right?”

Ah, here we go.

“…Heroes are real?”
“Of course! Oh, did you think they were just a fairy tale? They’re real and appear periodically.”

Wait, they appear periodically?

As I marveled at yet another piece of this world’s basic knowledge that I had somehow missed, Eric seemed to notice my interest.

“You seem intrigued.”

He pulled a chalkboard over.

“Let me explain briefly.”

Eric sketched a rough shape on the board—it was the continent where humans lived.

Then he drew a large circle in the middle, which I guessed represented the Empire.

“I’ve already explained about the Empire before, right?”
“Yes…”

I had heard about it in his lessons and from others. This kingdom is heavily influenced by the Empire.

“It’s undeniably the most powerful nation on the continent. Of course, there’s also the Demon Continent and the Eastern Continent, but here, the Empire reigns supreme.”

The Demon Continent and the East.

I had learned about these places during geography lessons.

The East resembled the Asia of my previous life, while the Demon Continent was home to the demons.

Apparently, demons are a distinct species, entirely different from devils.

There was even a massive war with them several decades ago.

Because of this, relations between the two continents are openly hostile.

“The Empire owes much of its growth to the Heroes. They have appeared periodically and greatly aided the Empire.”
“How do Heroes appear?”
“Well, there are two methods.”

Eric wrote two terms on the board:

[Divine Revelation, Summoning]

“Divine Revelation refers to Heroes chosen by the gods. They usually stumble upon a Holy Sword and emerge into the world.”
“And Summoning…?”
“If a Hero doesn’t appear at the right time, the Empire pours vast resources into summoning one.”
“Huh?”
“Since the continent is always teeming with danger, summoned Heroes have consistently achieved remarkable feats.”

Eric lightly tapped the chalkboard he was using with a piece of chalk.

“This teaching tool I’m using now? It was invented centuries ago by a Hero.”

“Ah… Do you know where they’re summoned from?”

“Well, that’s a closely guarded secret of the Empire.”

Hmm, I think I can guess.

So I’m not the only one who’s come here?

I didn’t think it was such a big deal.

If someone can reincarnate in the slums, it makes sense that others might be summoned to the Imperial Palace.

Lucky bastards.

They’re probably getting all sorts of lavish support and intense training from the Empire.

“Is there currently a Hero in the Empire?”

“The previous Hero has retired, and it’s about time for the next one to appear.”
“Oh, so there can be overlap?”
“Yes, since Heroes appear periodically, there have even been instances where three or four existed simultaneously.”

…What a haphazard system.
Still, it must be reassuring. With four Heroes, I almost feel sorry for the demons the Empire is supposedly hostile with.

“How did the previous Hero appear?”
“He was summoned.”
“Oh… Did he invent anything?”
“No. According to records, the previous Hero preferred wandering outdoors to working at a desk.”

So, he was a troublemaker.
I mean, if you’re born into a fantasy world as a Hero with a golden spoon, it makes sense to roam around, act tough, and collect mistresses.

If you’re born with nothing, you end up guarding a doghouse like me.

“Have you ever met a Hero?”

A Hero from another world… I’m curious.

If I ever get the chance, I’d like to meet one.

“No. Most people don’t get to meet them. The current Hero also made his first public appearance during a war.”

So, it’s not easy to meet them.

Well, how would you randomly run into a Hero on such a vast continent?

Maybe if a war broke out and I ended up on the battlefield, I could meet one.

But honestly, I’d prefer this peaceful era where I don’t have to see one.

Anyway, that’s that.

“Since you seem interested in Heroes, let me tell you about the Heroes of the past.”

The rest of the lesson covered stories of previous Heroes, and we finished the first resumed class.

After the class ended.

“How was the lesson?”
“It was interesting.”

As I was packing up the supplies I’d used, Eric asked me.

“Haha, that’s a relief. I was a bit worried since it’s been a while.”
“You’re always such a great teacher. No need to worry.”

I didn’t expect Eric to say something like that.

He always teaches with such confidence.

Even as a listener, I can tell he’s a highly skilled instructor.

“Hmm, that’s a kind thing to say.”
“Well, I’m the one benefiting greatly, so you don’t need to thank me.”
“…If only all my students were like you, Rain.”

Students?
I guess he teaches others as well.

That makes sense. His teaching skills are exceptional, so he’s probably employed as a professional instructor in multiple places.

“I think I’m rambling. I should take my leave now.”

With that, Eric left the reception room where the lesson had taken place.

Hmm, even an elite teacher like him seems to have his own concerns.
Still, it’s nothing I need to dwell on.

He’s smart—he’ll figure it out.

With the lesson done for the day, I headed straight back to the doghouse.

“Oh my, look at how well you’re walking now.”
“And it seems like your teeth are coming in, too?”

While I was away, Whitey was being thoroughly pampered by the maids.

Looking at him, it feels like he’s living the dream life.

What a spoiled pup.

“Oh? Sir Rain, you’re back?”
“Yes, but I need to head out again right away.”

“Sit here!”

After being lightly groomed by the maids, I donned the buff coat the mansion had tailored for me and strapped my sword to my waist.

“Oh… You look just like a knight!”

A knight, huh? If I had accepted Lowell’s proposal two years ago, I might have become one.

Then again, if that had happened, I wouldn’t be enjoying the freedom of visiting the Mercenary Guild or taking on various jobs like I do now.

“Well then, I’ll be off.”

Clink.

“Take good care of him, alright?”

As I was about to leave, Whitey clung to me, but I left him in the care of the maids and stepped out of the mansion.

Today was the day Jevan was supposed to bring back a mission. I wonder if he managed to find the new recruit he was talking about.

Walking past the luxury commercial district I had visited with the young lady two days ago, I made my way to the general commercial district, where the Mercenary Guild was located.

Ding-ling.

The moment I opened the guild door, the usual bustling noise hit me.

“Hey, you bastard!!”
“Get over here!”

Crash!

It was noisier than usual, likely because someone had started a fight.

A fight, huh?

Intrigued, I headed further inside and saw two groups squaring off.

One group was unfamiliar, while the other was all too familiar—it was Jevan and his subordinates.

“You little lapdog…”
“Watch your mouth unless you’re ready to back it up.”

Jevan stood at the forefront, facing off against a man who seemed to be the leader of the other group.
The tension was palpable, like a brawl could break out any second.

More importantly, there was someone new on Jevan’s side—a face I hadn’t seen before.

Was that the new recruit he mentioned?

The figure had their hood pulled low, but their weaponry stood out.

They carried a spear strapped to their back and had two swords hanging from their waist.

The weapons looked peculiar—too thin for hunting monsters.

“Excuse me.”

I called out, waving over one of the guild staff who were trembling nearby.

“Y-Yes?”
“Could you bring me a drink and some snacks?”
“R-Right now?”
“Yes, right now.”

There’s no better time than now for a good drink and some food.

Thankfully, I’d slipped in quietly enough that neither side had noticed me yet.

With a sense of anticipation, I dragged a nearby chair into a spot with a clear view of the impending fight and settled in.

Time to enjoy the show.

After all, there’s nothing more entertaining than watching a fight.
