Surviving in a F*cked-Up Fantasy World Chapter 38

Orc

The hulking figure, closer in build to a troll than an orc, wielded six arms—a rare anomaly for an orc champion.

Contrary to its brutish appearance, the creature’s speed as it charged was astonishing.

“Everyone except the rookie and Jevan, retreat to higher ground.”

“Y-Yes!”

Drawing my blade again, I addressed the mercenaries.

At that level of ferocity, the silver-ranked mercenaries would be overwhelmed instantly.

Only someone like Jevan or the new recruit would be of any use in this battle.

As the mercenaries retreated to the hilltop, I sprinted straight toward the orc champion, sword in hand.

GRRRAAAHH!

The orc champion, wielding a weapon in each of its six arms, roared and swung as I closed the distance.

…Surely it can’t control all six arms independently, right?

Even humans get tangled up with just two arms. There’s no way an orc could—

Boom!! Bang! Bang!

“Dammit, it’s handling them just fine.”

I leaned back swiftly to avoid the rapidly descending attacks.

“…Are you okay?”
“I’ll manage.”
“Should we…?”
“Just help when the timing’s right.”

I didn’t say I didn’t need help.

Both Jevan and the rookie could provide a critical boost when it counted.

Didn’t I learn that during sparring sessions with Darren and Kaiden?
When things surpass a certain level, numbers can be the ultimate advantage.

“Let’s do this.”

Still, the ideal scenario was me handling it alone.
With resolve, I closed in on the enemy once again.

Groaaar!!

The orc champion seemed pleased, likely because I had just backed off earlier.

I assumed my stance and focused my aura intently into my eyes.

Then.

Suddenly, the orc’s movements slowed, and it felt as if I had entered an entirely different world.

Swoosh.

And now, I could see a red trail connecting the orc champion and me.

It was the Boyd family’s secret Track revealing the most efficient path to the kill.

Following the path, I activated Fleet.

Boom-!

My body surged forward in an instant, moving exactly as predetermined.

Before I knew it, my extended blade was precisely aimed at the orc’s neck.

Then—

Clang!!

With a dull sound, my sword was deflected.

“What the…?”

Fleet deactivated, and I landed on the ground, bewildered.

What just happened?
It felt like I had struck armor.

I had aimed at the neck…
Puzzled, I turned to look at the orc champion I had just grazed past.

Rustle, Rustle.

From its neck, something resembling scales began to fall off.

…What the hell is that?
Do champions gain reinforced skin or something?

I’d never heard of an orc with scales.
Especially ones that conveniently protect its vital areas.

Groaaar!

On top of that, the scales were nearly transparent, making them undetectable before the attack.

In any case, the orc champion’s bloodshot eyes locked onto me, and it began swinging its weapons wildly.

“Great….”

Thud! Bang! Clang! Crash! Boom!

I dodged, blocked, parried, and countered—until one finally landed.

“Guh!”

The moment the club connected, the shock made it hard to breathe.

Damn it, no matter how much I dodge and defend, there’s no end to this.

What’s worse—

After five consecutive attacks, another arm was already swinging down.

Lying flat on the ground after the last strike, I debated how to handle this.

Guard?
No, blocking those brutish attacks would be a mistake.

The last time I tried to deflect, it left me vulnerable like this.

So, as I prepared to roll sideways to avoid the next blow—

Whoosh—

From the orc champion’s flank…

A figure flew into view.

Haap!”

It was the rookie, wielding a thin, long spear.

Thunk!

The rookie’s spear pierced straight into the orc champion’s first shoulder.

Graaaagh!

Distracted by the pain, the orc champion’s eyes shifted away from me.

Nice timing, rookie. I knew you’d pull through.

Taking advantage of the moment, I quickly got back on my feet.

Then—

“Slash!”

The rookie released the spear and drew his sword, launching into a dazzling series of strikes against the orc champion.

The strikes came faster than when he had sparred with me using a wooden sword—so fast that even I could barely follow the continuous blows.

Groooaaaar—!

But the orc champion’s thick skin seemed to absorb much of the damage, leaving only shallow, minor wounds.

Still, that was more than enough.

While the orc champion’s focus was on the rookie, I closed the distance and swung my sword.

This time, I aimed for its legs.
Six arms or not, taking out its legs would be more effective.

As I swung my blade, gathering aura.

‘Rush.’

Whoosh!!

The full force of Rush connected with the champion’s shin.

Graaaaghk!

The impact sent the orc champion staggering.

“I’m here too.”

Jevan announced, joining the fray with a massive hammer.

“What’s that?”
“It didn’t seem like my sword would pierce it, so I borrowed this.”

Fair enough.

Even the rookie’s thin katana barely scratched it after all those strikes.
A sledgehammer to the knee might actually do some damage.

“Careful, old man. One hit from that thing, and you’re done for.”
“…I’m still active duty, you know.”

That champion’s strength is no joke.

Could Jevan really take a hit from it?

The rookie seems fine since he’s quick on his feet, but Jevan…

Still, Jevan wasn’t holding back, his movements closer to those of an aura user. Impressive for his age.

Honestly, Jevan might lose in a direct fight against this thing.

But for now, with the three of us here—effectively six arms of our own—we could handle this.

Refocusing, I charged at the orc champion, whose attention was still on the rookie.

The finishing blow would have to come from me.

I targeted the champion’s neck again, where the scales had already been scraped off.

Are those scales regenerating?
What is it, a lizard or something?

This thing clearly wasn’t a normal orc champion.

But whatever—it still dies the same if its neck is severed.

Pushing off the ground, I launched myself toward the champion.

Grooarrrr!!!

Spotting me, the champion extended two of its right arms.

I dodged one arm by twisting my body—

Screech—

—And slashed through the fingers of the other arm before landing.

Whoosh—

But as soon as I touched the ground, another arm swung at me from the opposite side.

Endless, absolutely endless.

Blocking would be foolish, so I evaded by leaping to the side once more.

“Ugh!”

While Jevan swung his hammer at the champion from below, I noticed my opportunity.

This was the moment to strike while their attention was diverted.

Again.

‘Fleet.’

In the slowed-down world of Fleet, my enhanced body surged forward explosively.

Like an arrow, I darted behind the orc champion.
As I prepared to swing my blade—

Shhhkk—!

I saw it again—scales forming around its neck.

…Automatic defense? What a suspicious creature.

No matter.

Since I had seen it before, I focused my aura into the blade and infused it with Rush.

Then—

Bang!!

Gaaaak–!!

The burst of Rush stripped the scales from its neck.

While still airborne, I twisted my body to regain balance and, without hesitation, swung my blade at the exposed neck of the orc champion.

Crunch!!

The strike embedded halfway into its neck—lacking proper footing for a full force attack—but it was enough.

Grrrkk…!!!

Even that much was sufficient to sever its lifeline.

Then—

Thud!!

As I landed on the ground, the massive body of the orc champion collapsed with a resounding crash.

“Whew….”

Is it over?

Looking at the fallen beast, it occasionally twitched, but it didn’t seem capable of rising again.

Shunk!

I pulled my sword from its half-embedded position in the neck.

Then I turned to the others.

“Rookie, stay here. Jevan, come with me.”

I motioned for Jevan to follow while leaving the rookie behind.

“Huh? Where are you going…?”

“We’re heading to where this thing came from.”

This wasn’t a natural creature, no matter how you looked at it.

What kind of mutant wields six arms effortlessly and grows scales over its vital areas?

I intended to head straight into the cave it had emerged from.

“W-Wait a moment.”

But.

Jevan stopped me and motioned up the hill.

“Bring the lantern down!”

Ah, right. Jevan can’t use Track like I can.
With the sun setting, it would be impossible to see inside the cave without light.

At Jevan’s signal, the mercenaries stationed on the hill descended.

“Half of you, come with us.”

With extra hands, I split the group—half staying to guard the area, and the rest joining us as we entered the cave.

“Ugh.”
“This stench….”

The moment we entered, a foul odor assaulted our senses.

Not just a bad smell—it was overwhelming, nearly toxic.

“Shine the lantern carefully.”

What could be inside that could cause this smell?

I moved deeper into the cave, leading with the mercenary holding the lantern.

There were no signs of other presences inside.
It seemed this was where the champion lived alone.

Passing by rotting animal carcasses, presumably its food supply, and piles of excrement, we eventually reached the source of the unbearable stench—a massive well.

“This is….”
“A well in a cave?”

It was clear the orcs hadn’t built it.
Someone else had left it here.

“Shine the light closer.”

A few mercenaries and I approached the well cautiously.

And then—

“Wh-What is this…?”
“Hrk…!”

The mercenaries peered into the well and stumbled back in horror.

Curious, I looked inside and saw a tangled mass of corpses, crawling with maggots.

“Urgh….”
“Blegh….”

Even the most hardened mercenaries gagged and retched at the sight.

The grotesque scene made even me, accustomed to death, furrow my brow.

“Sir Cain, this….”
“We’re pulling out. We need to return to the city immediately.”

This was far beyond what we could handle on our own.
Clearly, there had been outside interference.

Casting a glance beyond the maggot-filled well, I noticed something deeper within the cave.

Faintly illuminated by the lantern light, I could see stone carvings in the shadows.

Well…

I had a decent idea of who might be behind this.
