The Last Day
Morning arrived in the medical ward. It was just a room where medical magic was performed, there were no nurses like in a hospital. I woke up and, not wanting to get up and head to the cafeteria, I sat on my bed looking at the strange patterned ceiling.
“Good morning.”
A knock sounded and Millet-san came in with a cheerful greeting. After confirming that I was looking relatively healthy, she asked me what I wanted for breakfast. When I hesitated to say anything, she must have heard what I said yesterday and asked me if it would be better not to see the students for the rest of the day, since tomorrow would be the sixth day and I would be descending to the lower world anyway. She asked.
“Yes,… but I still have some resistance to turn my back on my student…”
“You have a sense of responsibility, Shigeto-sama. I understand your feelings. But today…”
“…Yes.”
Damn. What a helpless feeling.
I did not originally enter the teaching profession with a passion for education.
I went to university in Tokyo to get away from my parents’ house, and after my grandfather passed away, I thought it would be better to be near my mother, who lived alone, so I got a job as a teacher at a high school in my home prefecture. I chose this job simply because I thought that high school might be better than elementary and middle school, where classes are often broken up. I also thought that the salary would be more stable if I worked for the prefecture.
Even so, I had been a teacher for eight years, and I was attached to the job. When I was asked to be an advisor for the kendo club at this school, the previous teacher happened to know my grandfather, and the principal, upon hearing about it, brought the idea to me. I was told that I could be an advisor in name only, not a coach, and I accepted.
However, since their previous teacher was a charismatic figure, I understood how the students were rebelling against such differences, and I even rather smiled at the kids who were running through such blue times.
Have I done something wrong? Or did coming to such a different world throw the balance off…?
After taking my meal, I realized that Karimah-san was still in charge of my education. He came to me like nothing had happened.
He then began the rest of his explanation of what was going on in the lower world.
It was important to know even a simple rate of exchange because the financial aspect directly affects people’s daily lives. It seemed that a religious state called “Wilbrand Church” was the sole issuer of paper money in this world. The Wilbrand Church was the headquarter of religion in this monotheistic world. This Sky Temple was also under the control of the Church of Wilbrand.
The largest nation in this world was the “Glenvaren Dynasty”. It was the first nation to be established. The “Wilbrand Church” was established as an independent state by integrating the shrines and other relics of God that existed within that dynasty.
This was due in part to the appearance of a transferee who had obtained the protection of “GS” and could hear the voice of God. That transferee, Fehlraben, created a system to accept transferees in this country and divine citizen registration cards. He also urged the spirits to build a Sky Temple. And so on. He would make various changes to this world.
There was even a legend that said that Fehlraben was not a transferee, but “GS” himself. In fact, after Fehlraben, there had never been any transferees who had obtained the patronage of “GS” in this world.
In any case, countries were dissatisfied with the monopoly of divine power by the dynasty, and the existence of Fehlraben, a human being who conveyed the will of God, prompted the king at the time to accept it and push for the establishment of a new nation.
Legend had it that the Glenvaren Dynasty, which ceded its lands, was also a legendary dynasty. It was said that when the transferees began to arrive in this world, most of them were immediately killed by the monsters that were already in this world. They were the first to survive. The first king of the Glenvaren Dynasty who survived, established a living sphere, and became the cornerstone of the transferees who followed him. King Heat Glen, the first king of the Glenvaren Dynasty.
“Does that mean that depending on the world you come from, there are people who can use magic or fight from the beginning?”
“Yes, that’s right. I heard that King Glen was a great warrior. There was no ranking system at that time, but it is said that there is no one who surpasses King Glen even now.”
“Well… how is our world… as a species?”
“Shigeto-sama’s world is a world where science and technology have developed, so the strength of original flesh and blood will be lower. However, since you can gain strength from the divine light, there is no such thing as actually being weak.”
I was feeling a little depressed, but since I was originally a world history teacher, I enjoyed hearing about the origins of this land and asked a lot of questions. I thought that since I couldn’t use much magic anyway, it wouldn’t make such sense to be taught magic skills like my students. It would be more fun to listen to the history.
The ranking is based on data such as physical and magical abilities, so is a high ranking better? That, too, is a difficult question.
“To improve your ranking, you have to improve your ability data. But, you can also improve your ranking by beating higher-ranked people.”
“… Huh? Then… no way.”
“Yes. If one’s ranking is high, it is advantageous to one’s employment. Therefore, there are those who attack the top rankers in order to raise their ranking.”
“That’s frightening. Aren’t they scared of being killed…?”
“There are cases like that. After that, place the opponent’s card on top of the space where your own card is buried. Declaring defeat sometimes works, though…”
“Isn’t that … weird, can’t money buy rankings?”
“God’s eye is on you, so that kind of dishonesty won’t be reflected in your ranking.”
“Oh, really?”
“Yes.”
Wow. A God-given ranking. That’s pretty accurate. But I’d rather live in peace…, so I guess I’m rather grateful for the low ranking.
And this evening. I was told that I had received an offer from the Republic of Rigaland.
The Republic of Rigaland was a relatively new country on the continent of Yggdrasil. Unlike other kingdoms, it seemed to be a democratic country. I heard that other countries, such as the Hodgkin Federation, were also practicing a form of democracy similar to that of Japan, but at the moment I felt that the Republic of Rigaland was the closest to the governance of Japan.
And perhaps because it was an emerging country, they were looking for people with a wide range of knowledge.
To me, this offer seemed quite ideal.
The other students were told that these talks of approaching them would be done individually. They wanted the students to be free to choose which country they would like to go to. Millet-san, who came to me to inform me of the request, said that the students were not interested in affiliating with a country, but were talking about becoming adventurers and thus choosing to be free.
What did she mean by “free”? I wondered. It seemed that the job of “adventurer”, which involves defeating monsters in uncharted lands and expanding the world of humans, was one of the flourishing jobs in this world. It was a great way to raise one’s rank and ability by fighting more monsters, she said.
“Is that… everyone’s consensus?”
I couldn’t understand why anyone would choose such a dangerous job. If you were employed by the state, your safety was guaranteed. Of course, if you became a warrior for the country, you would have to fight dangerous battles, but…
… Is this the kind of thinking that old people have?
“No, from what I hear everyone talking about in the cafeteria, I think they are working around Domoto-san, but I don’t know if that is everyone’s consensus.”
Domoto… as I recalled, he said, …that he was given the protection of a Tengen, a being that succeeded “GS”. He also said that his strength can go to a very high level if he trains himself. And Ikeda and Sakuragi also got the protection of Tendais, so they were quite blessed with the spirits.
If they had the confidence and ability to do it on their own, that was the way it would be… There were even a number of people. But I didn’t think they would accept me…
